Densitometry

Bone densitometry is used in the early diagnosis of osteoporosis, diagnosing the bone density and detecting bone mass loss. This method allows to identify disturbances of the mineral composition

What is it?

Osteoporosis is one of the most common diseases of human bone tissue. It causes a decrease in bone mass, micro-architectural disorders of the bone tissue and an increase in fracture risk.

This method is one of the most important measures in the fight against osteoporosis. This is a simple study, which is a non-invasive method and allows you to quickly, safely and with high accuracy measure and determine bone mineral density and prescribe therapy on time, without bringing the disease to severe stages when it will already be incurable. Bone calcium stores begin to decline after age 30 and can reach a critical minimum by age 50, making the diagnosis of bone health especially important in adulthood.
Bone densitometry is the only method that can confirm the diagnosis and detect the disease in the early stages.

When do you need it?

Doctors suggest Densitometry for the following symptoms:

  • Frequent bone fractures, especially hips
  • Fractures, dislocations associated with the spine
  • Regular back pain with no known cause
  • Diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, kidneys, liver
  • Diabetes

There are also a number of conditions for which densitometry is recommended:

  • Metabolic disorders associated with the removal of calcium and phosphorus from the body
  • Neurological diseases
  • Long term hormonal treatment
  • Previously diagnosed osteoporosis
  • Endocrine system disorders

For preventive purposes, different types of this examination (including dental densitometry) are used in such cases:

  • Monitoring the level of bone density of the female body during pregnancy
  • Monitoring the calcium and phosphorus status in the fetal tubular bone formation stage
  • Monitoring the progress of osteoporosis treatment
  • Preventive bone health screening for people over forty

What are the contraindications?

There are not many, and they are related to the nature of the type of densitometry used:

  • X-rays should not be used if the patient is ill
  • Pain or abnormalities in the lumbar region that will prevent the patient from lying still for at least half an hour
